No occasion whatsoever
For You
Nobody makes one of these for a friend, which struck me as an oversight worth correcting.
The reason
Nothing happened. That is the point.
People generally get told they matter at weddings, at funerals, or during a crisis. All three are terrible venues for it — everyone is emotional, nobody is listening properly, and half of it goes unsaid anyway.
So I am doing it now, on an ordinary week, while nothing is at stake.
What you are actually like.

You are the person who turns up. Not with advice, not with a plan — you just arrive and stay until the worst of it has passed, and you never once make it about how hard it was for you to come.
You remember the small thing someone mentioned in passing three months ago. You are the first person I want to tell good news to and the only one I trust with the bad.
That is a very short list. You have been on it for a long time.
Turn these over.
We do not say this sort of thing to each other, so it is going on cards instead.
Things we have done
- Years ago

The night you drove four hours
You did not ask what had happened until we were most of the way back. I have never forgotten that you got the order right.
- That summer

The trip we planned badly
No itinerary, one map, and a genuinely dangerous amount of confidence.
- Every year
The same argument
We have had it eleven times. Neither of us has moved a millimetre. It is the most stable thing in my life.
The archive
Curated for accuracy, not for flattery.
Ours, somehow
The one from that summer
For whenever
Call me. I will not have advice. I will have the car keys and the ability to sit there quietly, which is the actual requirement.
You turn up for people. Consistently, at cost, without mentioning it. That is not a small trait and you treat it like nothing.
Nothing has changed on my end. It never does with us. Pick up exactly where we left off.
You have never asked me
to be a better version of myself.
You just made it
considerably easier.
A toast
Here’s to you.
- To the four-hour drive, and to asking nothing on the way.
- To the argument we will never resolve.
- To turning up.
- And to the next decade of exactly this.
One more thing
I did the thing you kept saying we should do.
We have been saying it for two years, every time, and never once put a date on it.
I put a date on it.
The part I have never said sober
We are not the kind of people who say this to each other. Our entire register is jokes and mild insults, and it works, and I do not particularly want to change it.
But it means a fairly important thing has gone unsaid for years, so: you have made my life materially better, and I would be a noticeably worse person without you in it.
We never have to mention this again.
— thank you
No wedding.
No funeral.
No crisis in progress.
Just an ordinary week,
and something
that needed saying.
That is all.
Normal service resumes immediately.
made for you, for no reason
